Meet the Fiber Sheep Breeding Flock

***This page has been updated for the spring 2024 lambing season***

We breed purebred, registered Bluefaced Leicester sheep and landrace BFL crosses with focus on fiber qualities. Our focus with the wool flock is high-quality, clean wool, that has a longer staple length while being next-to-skin soft. With the BFL flock we are also focusing on keeping the BFL standard in our registered sheep. We also select for good conformation, good mothering qualities, and hardy sheep.  Since we keep a smaller flock our sheep are all very friendly and handled often.

Rams:

Wallace

Wallace is a registered, purebred white Bluefaced Leicester ram. He has excellent conformation and a high-quality fleece that fits the BFL fleece standards beautifully. His fleece is very fine and long, with excellent curl. It has beautiful luster and comes perfectly clean. Wallace has settled all his ewes in his 3 years with us (7 ewes) and sired 12 lambs (8 ewe lambs and 4 ram lambs). His lambs carry on his beautiful fleece qualities and his rams especially get his regal conformation and looks.

Bruce

Bruce is a registered, purebred colored BFL ram. We love his “pewter” coloring (black edges with grey/silver added in the barrel fleece). We didn’t jacket him, so there is quite a bit of sun-bleaching on his fleece in this photo, which gives it the brown ends. Even with the sun bleaching, his yarn still turns out dark grey with silver highlights (see photo below). He has great conformation, and his fleece is an excellent example of a BFL fleece. He has a lot of curl and bounce to his fleece. In the two years we have owned him, Bruce has settled every ewe he has been with (6 ewes) and sired 5 ewe lambs and 8 ram lambs (13 lambs). His lambs have had nice conformation and beautiful fleece.

Ewes:

Agnes

Agnes is a white, registered purebred Bluefaced Leicester (BFL) ewe. She has a high-quality fleece that shows the wonderful traits typical for the BFL standards. Agnes is an excellent mother. She singled her first year and twined both years since for a total of 5 lambs – 4 ewe lambs and 1 ram lamb. Her lambs are beautiful with fine fleece and good conformation. Agnes is our friendliest wool ewe and loves to come get her petting when we are in the barnyard.

Bunny

Bunny is a white, registered purebred Bluefaced Leicester (BFL) ewe. She has a very nice, high-quality fleece. It has good memory, is springy, and has a fine curl/crimp distance. It also has beautiful luster. She singled her first year, then gave us triplets in 2023 from Wallace. The lambs had great conformation and the finest fleece of all the lambs that year. She was an excellent mother and produced plenty of milk for the triplets. Bunny’s third year (2024) she gave us twins, for a total of 6 lambs – 4 ewe lambs and 2 ram lambs.

Fiona

Fiona was born on our farm spring of 2023. She was a triplet born to our ewe Bunny by our ram Wallace. She has a super-fine BFL fleece that is oh-so-soft and was noticeably softer than the rest of the lambs this season. We are looking forward to her soft fleece and her lambs as we breed her in the coming years. She is also super friendly with us and loves to be pet.

Lacey

Lacey is a registered, purebred, colored BFL that joined our flock in 2023. She has lambed previously and is a good mother. She has wonderful BFL qualities that we feel will add nicely to our flock and cross well with our rams. She has a beautiful BFL fleece. Lacey was bred by Bruce for 2024 lambing and gave triplets – 2 ewe lambs and 1 ram lamb.

Lacey is the first BFL ewe we have milked. She has excellent udder conformation and teat placement that makes milking her easy. She is docile in the stanchion and has produced well for the first month of milking her so far. We are looking forward to seeing what her production will be like as we continue through the milking season. She is our first truly triple-purpose sheep and hopefully the start of a flock of BFLs that not only have excellent fleece qualities and size that makes the rams valuable for meat, but also good dairy qualities for family use.

Matilda

Matilda is an Australian Bond ewe from the Gleason farm in Lyons, Colorado. The Gleasons originally imported the Bond breed to America in 2000. They have been carefully breeding the Bonds to preserve the great fleece qualities of this breed. Matilda is a beautiful example of a Bond ewe. Her fleece are very lustrous, long, and have a very organized crimp. She is an excellent mother and has had singles twice, and a very surprising set of triplets – for a total of 2 ewe lambs and 3 ram lambs.

Annie

Annie joined the flock in spring of 2023. She is a grey CVM/Merino/BFL ewe with a beautifully soft fleece. She actually comes from our lines from many years ago. Her previous owner purchased her mother from us pregnant with her from our ram. Annie was bred by Bruce for 2024 lambing and gave us two beautiful ram lambs. We are very excited to see how these boys’ fleece turn out.

Tansy

Tansy is an American Teeswater Sheep Association registered 82.1% Teeswater ewe and was born as a single. She is three years old and had triplets in 2023. She is curious and watchful. We were very excited to add Tansy to our farm at the end of 2023. She was bred to Doc N’ Dale from Busy Ewe Farm for the 2024 lambing season and birthed triplets – 2 ewe lambs and 1 ram lamb – her babies are 90% Teeswater.
