We have been making salve around here this week! It is a fun family project, plus it provides the most popular item in our store.
For three years I worked at perfecting a recipe for an herbal salve that would work on all my family’s “owies.” I went through several recipes and combinations of herbs, all of which worked pretty well, but none excellent. Then, I finally landed on the perfect combination of herbs that help promote healing, remove infection, and soothe the pain. We use it on every skin issue we have, from burns to diaper rashes to minor cuts and scrapes. We even use it on our pets and livestock! It is safe for babies and animals because it is made with all natural products: olive oil, beeswax, and herbs. I began giving out the salve to family and friends and they kept coming back for more, raving about the uses.
We had someone say they had tried all different diaper ointments on their baby’s terrible diaper rash and none worked, but that my salve cleared it up in just a few days. We heard from someone who suffered from eczema for years and they said, though it didn’t completely heal it, it worked better on it than anything they had ever tried. We heard from someone whose son had gotten a ton of mosquito bites while camping, that the salve helped so much that the son kept asking for it to be put on. Since everyone liked it so much, in 2011 we decided to offer it to the public.
Once we began selling it more positive comments came pouring in. Not only was it working well on the humans who bought it, but they also had used it on their pets and livestock with excellent results. One woman’s horse went through a barbed wire fence, tearing up both front legs. She put our salve on one of the legs, and her usual product on the other. She said the difference was amazing. The side with our salve on it healed faster and grew the hair back faster as well. The difference between the two was significant enough that she now always has one of our large tins of salve in her barn, and she doesn’t use the other stuff anymore.

Mountain Mommy’s Salve is the top-selling product in our store, and therefore, this last week we ran out of it and had to make another batch. I thought I would share how we make it with you.
First, we line a large pot with a clean pillowcase (this is a pillowcase we only use for salve-making). We add our special mixture of herbs inside the pillowcase and pour olive oil over them.
We heat this mixture on low for several hours, NEVER letting it boil.
Next, we lift the bag up and hang it above the pot (in the photo we had switched it to another bowl) to drain all the oil out of the herbs. We let it drip for a couple of hours, and then squeeze the bag as well to get every last bit of oil out.
The herbs can be discarded, and the oil is kept. This is called an “herbal infused oil.”
Next, we return the oil to the stove, in a pot specifically for this part of the process, not used for anything else, because there is wax involved. We add beeswax pastilles into the oil…
…and heat it gently over low heat until all the beeswax is melted.
Once it is melted we drop a little bit on a paper plate and let it cool to room temperature, checking to be sure the consistency is just right.
Now, we pour up the salve. For the store, we use tins. But for our own family use we have used mason jars as well. We poured up over 100 containers for this batch!
We pour in the evening after the kids are in bed because we want the salve to cool with a nice smooth top and thumping of the table and running around on the floor can mess that up. Plus, it needs to sit undisturbed for several hours to cool completely.
The next morning we awake to wonderfully set salve, ready to be labeled and shipped out!
Go buy yourself a tin of our Mountain Mommy’s Salve and use it on yourself, your kids, your pets, and livestock!
